What is Kaiju No. 8 about?
Kafka Hibino works in kaiju cleanup and gets a new chance to join the Defense Force after a life-changing encounter.
KAIJU NO. 8
QUICK TAKE
Kaiju No. 8 pairs spectacular monster fights with a hero who has already missed his first chance to join the Defense Force. Kafka’s work cleaning up after kaiju makes the dream feel grounded before it gets strange. The action is crisp and the squad has appeal; the familiar battle-anime escalation is its main limitation.

THE CLEANUP CREW GETS A HERO
Kafka Hibino once promised childhood friend Mina that he would join the Defense Force, but life took him into kaiju cleanup work instead. A new encounter changes his body and brings him back toward that promise. This review covers the two released TV seasons, as distinct from any future installments.
A SECOND CHANCE WITH A MONSTER SECRET
The cleanup setting gives the world a practical texture: kaiju battles have consequences after the spectacle ends. Kafka’s adult perspective adds warmth and humour to the squad story, while his secret creates a steady tension between the power that could help and the identity that could make him a target. The central team dynamics are familiar, but the show stages its large-scale fights with energy.
VERDICT
Kaiju No. 8 is an accessible, entertaining action series with a likable older hero and clear visual spectacle. Its most distinctive element is Kafka’s double life; the broader squad-and-monster structure will feel familiar to genre fans.
Crunchyroll marks the series as not recommended for minors under 14 and lists violence, blood/gore, and smoking.
