Kazuya rents Chizuru as a girlfriend after a breakup, and the arrangement grows more complicated.
RENT-A-GIRLFRIEND
QUICK TAKE
Rent-a-Girlfriend makes a bad first decision into a long-running romantic tangle. Kazuya’s rented date with Chizuru starts as a cover for heartbreak and grows into a complicated set of feelings. The slow burn and awkward humour are the appeal; the repeated misunderstandings can also make progress feel frustratingly slow.
Dreaming Anime is a Trinidad-rooted, Caribbean anime publication for fans worldwide.
A PRETEND DATE WITH REAL CONSEQUENCES
After a breakup, college student Kazuya rents a girlfriend and meets Chizuru. The arrangement becomes difficult to keep separate from family expectations, friendship, and genuine feelings. This review considers the TV adaptation through Season 5; Season 6 has been announced and is outside the coverage here.
THE LONG GAME OF ROMANTIC COMEDY
Chizuru’s professionalism and Kazuya’s insecurity create an effective contrast, and the supporting cast keeps shifting the social pressure around them. The series can make a small moment of honesty feel significant because the characters spend so long avoiding it. That same structure is its biggest frustration: repeated backtracking and suggestive comedy can slow the emotional payoff.
VERDICT
Rent-a-Girlfriend is an intentionally messy romantic comedy with a strong central pairing and a deliberately slow path forward. Viewers who like long-running relationship drama may enjoy the tension; those who need decisive progress may find it exasperating. Season 6 is not covered.
Crunchyroll marks the series as not recommended for minors under 16 and lists suggestive dialogue, sexual content, nudity, and profanity.
