Alicization is Sword Art Online at its most ambitious. It moves beyond the familiar game-world structure and places Kirito inside the Underworld, a simulated society designed to develop artificial human intelligence. The setting feels like a fantasy frontier, but its central question is technological and moral: if a digital person can think, feel, remember, and fear, what separates that life from our own?

The early story deliberately slows down to establish the Underworld’s rules, institutions, and social limits. Kirito’s friendship with Eugeo gives the arc its emotional centre, while the Taboo Index shows how control can become part of everyday culture. The world is not dangerous only because of monsters or battles. It is dangerous because people have been taught that certain questions cannot be asked.

KIRITO AND EUGEO

Eugeo is one of the strongest companions in the series because his development is inseparable from the structure of the Underworld. He begins as a young man shaped by obedience, responsibility, and inherited rules. His journey is not simply becoming stronger; it is learning that morality sometimes requires resisting the system that claims to protect society. His bond with Kirito turns Alicization into a story about friendship as shared courage rather than one hero carrying everyone else.

THE UNDERWORLD AS A LIVING SOCIETY

Alicization’s greatest strength is its attention to social design. Villages, guilds, nobles, churches, and laws all influence how characters understand their choices. The Administrator’s rule transforms personal desire into political power, making the arc’s conflicts feel connected to questions of ownership and exploitation. The fantasy imagery is impressive, but the world-building matters most when it shows how people adapt to limits they did not choose.

THE COST OF VIRTUAL LIFE

The arc also deepens the series’ long-running interest in memory and identity. Kirito’s body, memories, and sense of self are repeatedly placed under pressure, while the residents of the Underworld are forced to confront whether their lives belong to them. Alicization does not offer an easy answer. Instead, it argues that personhood is revealed through relationships, choices, and the ability to recognise another being’s pain.

WHY IT MATTERS

Alicization expands Sword Art Online from a survival adventure into a broader science-fiction fantasy about artificial life, authority, and ethical responsibility. Its scale can make the pacing uneven, but its best ideas are among the series’ richest. The Underworld is memorable because it is not just another map; it is a test of whether a world built by humans can create people who deserve freedom.
