QUICK TAKE

Tougen Anki gives its blood-powered battles a personal starting point: Shiki discovers that the old conflict between Oni and Momotaro runs through his own life. Its strongest hook is the friction between inherited identity and chosen purpose. The trade-off is familiar battle-shonen momentum, where widening factions and escalating powers can take space from quieter character work. As a complete 24-episode opening, Season 1 lays out a clear, energetic path into a much larger feud.

A FOLKTALE RECAST AS A BLOOD FEUD

The series takes the familiar Momotaro story and turns it into a modern conflict between two inherited lines. Shiki begins outside that history; the attack on his family forces him to confront the Oni blood within him and the war that follows it. That premise gives the action an immediate emotional anchor: this is not just a clash between teams, but a young person trying to understand the story that has suddenly claimed him.

IDENTITY IS THE STRONGEST HOOK

Shiki’s awakening naturally raises a more interesting question than whether he can become stronger: how much of a person is decided by ancestry, and how much by the choices made after the truth comes out? The revenge-driven setup supplies urgency, while the Oni–Momotaro divide gives the story room to question easy labels. That tension is where Tougen Anki can make its familiar supernatural battle framework feel personal.

WHEN THE WAR GROWS, KEEP THE PEOPLE IN VIEW

A generational conflict invites larger factions, new abilities, and a widening cast. That scale gives the season a strong sense of runway, but it also creates its main risk: escalation can become its own reward if the people caught inside the conflict stop driving it. The most promising moments are therefore the ones that keep Shiki’s changing sense of self connected to the battles around him, rather than treating power growth as the whole point.

COMPLETE TV SEASON 1 · 24 EPISODES

This review covers the complete 24-episode first TV season. The official anime site identifies its 2025 two-cour run as the Kyoto arc followed by the Nerima arc. Crunchyroll lists Season 1 through Episode 24, “Until We Meet Again.” The later second season, which the official site lists separately, is outside this review’s scope.

VERDICT

Tougen Anki Season 1 has a clean central hook: a young man discovers that an old folklore war is also a question about his own identity. The Oni–Momotaro premise gives the action a distinctive frame, and the full season builds a sizable conflict around it. Its familiar revenge-and-escalation rhythms may feel well-worn to battle-shonen regulars, but viewers looking for bloodline mythology, supernatural combat, and a story with room to expand have a clear reason to continue.
